Physician
Youth Health Centre
Contract | Part-Time

Job Overview: We are seeking an experienced, empathetic physician to provide full scope, trauma-informed medical care to youth aged 12 to 24. Patients are often more complex in terms of physical and psychosocial challenges and face greater barriers to care than those in a fee-for-service family practice. Our ARP model of reimbursement, in conjunction with longer appointment times, allows our physicians to tackle tough health and social issues, guiding individuals on their journey from crisis to wellness, and from challenge to change.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hold and panel and provide full scope primary care in-person and virtually to clients aged 12-24 (including infants and children of the youth clients).
  • Work effectively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including, but not limited to, LPN’s, mental health clinicians, and social workers.
  • Shadow bill for indirect and direct patient care.
  • Facilitate and support allied health team members to work to full scope of practice.
  • Remain flexible regarding patient scheduling for same-day, walk-in appointments (there are frequent no shows and cancellations of scheduled appointments).
  • Respond to acute concerns as appropriate for a family physician in an outpatient setting (i.e. fluctuating behavior, drug poisoning, active suicidal ideation).
  • Prescribe contraception, insert and remove IUDs, and possibly the contraceptive skin implant.
  • Potentially prescribe OAT and practice addiction medicine.
  • Work with clients who bring complex mental health concerns and complex psychosocial circumstances.
  • Attend primary care provider meetings as needed (1-4 times per year, in the evening).
  • Assist with data collection and entry as directed.
  • Complete organization-wide training as required (e.g. responding to suspected opioid overdoses, facility orientations etc.)
  • Complete lab reviews when assigned.
  • Support student learners and residents as required.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
  • Appropriate medical liability insurance coverage (i.e. CMPA or equivalent).
  • Affiliation with a Primary Care Network (PCN) or willingness to join a PCN.
  • 2+ years of experience working with youth, vulnerable populations, sexual and reproductive health, and/or LGBTQ2s an asset.
  • Comfort and experience with prenatal care, addictions medicine, and gender affirming care in the LGBTQ2S+ community an asset.
  • Comfort with pregnancy options discussion is required. It is recommended that the practitioner be skilled in medical abortion or willing to train.
  • A passion for advocating and building relationships with hard to engage youth
  • Comfort in completing a Form 1, as required.
  • An understanding of the social determinants of health as they pertain to marginalized and underserved populations.
  • EMR experience and the ability to use Netcare is required.
  • Up-to-date CPR training is required upon starting at The Alex.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and a child welfare intervention check are required.
  • Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) 94 Calls to Action is an asset.

Work Environment and Hours:

  • The Alex Community Health Centre is located at 2840-2 Ave SE in Calgary, AB.
  • This is a contract position from October 2024 to March 2025.
  • 0.2 FTE (1 day per week – approximately 7.5 hours/week)
  • Currently, the ARP rate is $180.45 per hour after overhead.
  • Standard hours: 1000 – 1600
  • The clinic is currently closed on evenings and weekends. There is no on-call.
  • Minimum appointment times are 30 minutes with the ability to book 60-minute appointments as needed.
  • Our EMR is Telus’ new Collaborative Health Record (CHR) which will replace existing Wolf, Practice Solutions, and MedAccess EMRs.
  • Administrative support is available for patient panel management, management of daily appointment flow through clinic including bookings, confirmations, rooming, appropriate diagnostics and investigations, facilitation of referrals, and other services.
  • Access to on-site lab/phlebotomy.
  • Access to in-house specialists including, but not limited to, Rapid Access Addictions Medicine (RAAM), Dermatology, Endocrinology, Internal/Occupational Medicine, OB-GYN, Pediatrics (pending), Psychiatry and Physiatry.
  • Access to allied health services/team members and nursing such as audiology, diabetes education/management, counseling, acupuncture, dietician, and foot care.
