The Enhanced Lipid Reporting (ELR) screening initiative was created by the Cardiovascular Health & Stroke Strategic Clinical Network to:
- Help identify cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in patients
- Share targeted management recommendations with physicians
- Provide patients with education and behaviour change resources
When sending patients for lipid-based blood tests, adding the ELR screen is a quick and simple addition.
To complete the screening process:
- Confirm you have the most recent lab requisition form in your EMR. Older versions will not have the ELR screening available.
- Select the Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessment option on the requisition form in your EMR.
- Fill out the required information that will not be autopopulated in the form.

Once the bloodwork is complete, you will receive an Enhanced Lipid Report with the patient’s risk details and customized treatment recommendations.
For Enhanced or Comprehensive members:
- Our Primary Care Registered Nurses have received training on ELR and are able to counsel patients on their test results.
- If you are interested in beginning a screening project relating to ELR, please reach out to your PMH team.
CVD is the second leading cause of death in Alberta, making screening and prevention a priority for at-risk patients.
Additional information relating to the ELR screening initiative is available on the AHS website.
