The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) recently shared guidance for physicians who want to provide emotional support to their peers without impacting medico-legal risk.
Balancing support and responsibilities:
- Collegial support matters as medico-legal issues can be isolating and distressing, but having these hard conversations can make a difference to mental health.
- Despite the benefit of these conversations, privacy and confidentiality are still vital issues that require the safeguarding of patient information.
- Physicians must be careful not to compromise the medico-legal process; they may only be able to share that they are the subject of a complaint that is distressing.
