Family physicians know their patients best, have their records, and are the best appointment option in most cases — but you can’t be available all the time.
So, 365 days a year, our Access Appointment Service at the Primary Care Centre:
- Supports you and your patients with appointments when medical care is needed within 24 hours, but you can’t see them
- Faxes a summary of the visit to the family physician after the appointment
- Acts as an alternative to walk-in clinics and the emergency department (for non-emergency needs)
Hours of operation are 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays (upcoming Christmas Day on Wednesday, Dec. 25, Boxing Day on Thursday, Dec. 26, and New Year’s Day on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025).
To help the team ahead of the expected holiday “referral rush,” please:
- Review the inclusion-exclusion criteria informed by physicians and our Medical Director
- Include a concise but detailed referral reason on the referral form when referring
- Consider watching the relevant topics in the Access Appointment Service webinar recording (strong versus challenging referrals in 90 seconds and answers to common questions in two minutes)
Quick answers to three common questions:
- With over 500 physicians in our membership, the service cannot act as locum coverage.
- Locum recruitment resources to consider include our classifieds, the AMA’s locum job board, and the U of C’s list of community practice opportunities.
- Locums can refer to the service when working for a member (please indicate the member on the referral form).
- Family physicians are best suited to make specialist referrals and follow-up, but the attending physician with our service will refer if necessary.
Thank you to everyone who will be working over the holidays to provide this important service.
